The Walled Off Hotel opened on 3 March 2017 - the name represents a creative use of wording. Its name takes its cue from the famous Waldorf Hotel in New York City and the fact that The Walled Off Hotel is located next to the separation wall in Bethlehem, Palestine. It provides visitors with a strong sense of history, spirituality and emotion ... It has been described as the hotel with ''the worst view in the world'' - with 8 rooms, each with a view directly across the street to the separation wall.
On Banksy's own Instagram account with more than 10.3 million followers, on September 7, 2017, Banksy announced the following: ''The gift shop opened today - located in the back of the hotel. Not to be confused with the ''Banksy Shop'' next door, which has absolutely nothing to do with me''. Note his own quote - in his own words, that the hotel's gift shop represents his work under his authority/under his supervision as to what will or will not be featured - as opposed to the shop located next door from the Walled Off hotel, which has no such authority. This aspect must be mentioned to prove the authenticity of the works. All works are certified by a sales receipt from the Walled Off Hotel. The document also carries the number of each work, which is marked on the underside.
The hotel was open from 3 March 2017 to early 2020. The original sculptures of the single panels of the separation wall were made by Banksy in the UK. They were then shipped to Palestine where, under Banksy's supervision, they were completed by local leading graffiti artists. Almost all of them have an authentic piece of concrete from the separation wall instead of a plinth. All this additional work had to be approved by the artist - Banksy. In total, approximately 30 designs were put into production. The limit for the buyer was set at 1 statue per guest during their stay at the hotel to prevent speculative purchases. The total number of miniatures did not exceed three thousand, and some were produced in only one design
