Guglielmo Zocchi
Guglielmo Zocchi (1874 - 1932 ?) - "The Recital" - oil on canvas - 70 x 110 cm
G. Zocchi was an Italian painter known for oriental as well as classicist European painting of the 19th century. He was born into an artistic family, trained with Tito Conti, a history painter, portraitist and costume designer. After him, he inherited a fondness for genre themes: he specializes mainly in creating scenes in Greek and Roman costumes.
Guglielmo participated in various exhibitions, dealing with private procurement. He gained immediate and lasting success, especially in foreign markets. His paintings were demanded by representatives of the upper middle class, aristocracy and foreign politicians. He received commissions for painting portraits, always in Greek or Roman costume. Due to his low participation in official exhibitions, it is not easy to reconstruct his biography through art production. Although it is in fact very extensive and scattered in private English, German and American collections. One of his paintings was included in the collection of the State Gallery in Santiago de Chile.
Since his debut under the Florentine painter Tito Conti, Guglielmo Zocchi has been interested in costume painting. His teacher specialized mainly in portraits and genre scenes in 17th century costumes, paying great attention to historical details. Guglielmo inherited this quality, although he preferred to specialize in the so-called Neo-Pompeian genre. The exact date and place of the artist's death is unknown.
