František Tichý

František Tichý (25.3.1896 Prague – 7.10.1961 Prague) was a Czech painter, illustrator, graphic artist and stage designer. He belonged to the important personalities of the Czech artistic avant-garde of the 20th century. Paintings and graphics with a circus theme have an important place in his work, which contained a deeper subtext connected to the author's reflections on the essence of artistic creation, the meaning of life, the fate of man and his existence.

Between 1917 and 1923 he studied at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts in the studio of Jakub Obrovský and later with Franz Thiele and Karel Krattner.

František Tichý was a distinct artistic individuality - a solitaire who stood outside of all artistic groups and currents. His contribution is a poetic, very human and specially conceived work of refined technique. His main distinguishing feature is a feeling for the graceful movement of the figure and the ability to have a sensitive concept of working with light. He accompanied the objects in the paintings created by solid lines, light and shadow with subtle color shades.
